Getting a puppy was the most exciting thing (at that moment at least). Finally I got to responsible for someone else other than myself. I could not wait to get back home and for it to jump all over me as many puppies are in the habit of doing. The jumping gave me a feeling of being loved and appreciated. Weird I know.
However, with time, I have gotten used to the puppy and the excitement has died down. However, the dog still jumps on me and worse still on the guests that I invite over. It can be real embarrassing and inappropriate especially if my friend is not a dog fun.
Therefore in a bid to find a solution to my problem or so I thought, I turned to the 21st century portal of knowledge. The internet. Surely I will find an answer to my problem. And sure enough, after typing, ??I need to stop my dog from jumping on people’, I got lots of search results. Who knew so many people all over the world faced the same problem. This I might say, as narcissistic as it might sound, was a relief for me.
Turns out one of the primary reason that my dog jumps on me every time I get into the house is so that it can establish authority (weird way to show power right?). My dog needs to put across somehow that it is the pack leader. And since it cannot talk like me and you, it jumps on me and other people.
In addition to this, my dog like any other dog out there is looking to make a connection with a human. The strongest scent that they have is their sense of smell, and as a result. They will want to smell each and every person in order to identify them. And as it turns out, the strongest scents from humans come from the genitals and the mouth.
However, given that we wear lots of clothes, the scent down from our genitals is usually not as strong as they would like which makes them turn to the next body part. The Mouth.
In as much as my dog sniffing my crotch area is embarrassing for me, especially in public, turns out that it actually as a clear conscious since it is good manners. Actually, it could not be on better manners than that.
However, to save myself the embarrassment while we are out in the park, I pick it up and it clams down. Thinking that I have solved the problem only for it to recur. This as I learnt only pressed pause on the jumping.
I however realized that to put a stop to the behavior, I should establish myself as the pack leader in the house. And I must say, it has been working well. My dog now projects itself in a very calm manner. One I must say that I had not been treated to before. I have also found other ways to show affection to my dog. I treat it like a dog, not a child. This might sound harsh but it is the best thing that anyone can do for his/ her own dog. I really struggled with this, but as I read in this guide, you can still be nice and caring for your dog, and they like to feel the pack hierarchy in place, it makes them feel better even :)
There is nothing better or as good as being understood and being treated as you should be right?
